“Hogan Lovells has elected 24 new partners and promoted 41 attorneys to counsel, of counsel and consultant.”

“Reed Smith LLP elected 24 new partners and promoted 19 associates to counsel.”

A cursory glance over the press releases issued this first full working week of 2015 will show a litany of large number partner promotions – the chess play that is positioning new partners as anchors in offices and leaders in practice areas is in full force. Big and small firms alike are making good on their New Year’s resolutions to invest in, expand and strengthen their hold on their chosen markets.

While some Biglaw firms are choosing the conservative move of evenly spreading out their partners to their existing strongholds, such as Shook, Hardy & Bacon, other firms are choosing to make moves into geographic areas or practice areas they’ve only just tested the waters in up until now.

Eight of the 14 partners recently promoted by Shook, Hardy & Bacon strengthen existing stronghold in Kansas City.

Alston & Bird LLP has promoted 20 partners in 2015 already, and while the majority of those promoted fortify the Atlanta-based firm’s Georgia turf, a quarter of those partners bolster their investment in the California market. Their combined California presence, with offices in Los Angeles and Palo Alto, now surpasses their North Carolina, Washing D.C. and New York offices for attorney headcount.
