Attorney Wellness: Nutrition Could Be Impacting Your Brain

Posted on

Believe it or not, if you’re depending heavily on take-out, restaurant food for lunch and dinner, you could be hurting your brain. Working at a law firm is stressful enough without the added burden of a diet consisting of mostly fast-food and over-processed products adding yet another stress to your life (and your arteries).

  • Cognitive function. A diet that lacks essential nutrients such as Omega-3s and Omega-6s will leave you mentally dull. Ever skipped one too many meals and found yourself unable to think straight? That’s because just like your body depends on nutrition to run effectively so does your brain.  Lawyers who do not get the right kinds of nutrients will not be able to bring their ‘A’ game to the law firm.
  • Loss of focus. A diet that’s burdened with lots of sugar and simple carbohydrates can leave you feeling mentally scattered. It is difficult to stay focused on challenging and sometimes mundane daily tasks when you have poor nutrition.  Make sure that you have a diet filled with fresh produce and high-quality protein if you want to remain focused at work.
  • Depression. Poor diet does not just impact how sharp you are during your workday, it can also impact your mood. Skipping meals and eating nutrient poor (but high calorie and fatty) foods can leave you feeling blue and even worsen the symptoms of existing depression. While nutrition is no silver bullet for mental health issues, it is proven that a balanced and high nutrition diet can help lessen symptoms especially in the case of depression.

Improve your mental well-being and productivity by prioritizing a nutritious diet regardless of how many hours you work or your caseload. Subscribe to the Leopard Blog for discussions on diversity, law firm insights, and other relevant topics.
