Law Firms: Three Signs It’s Time To Hire More Employees

Hiring more employees at the right time is critical to ensuring the success of your law firm and any business. When it comes to hiring more employees, it can be a real catch-22 for your organization. Hire too slowly, you may find yourself turning down work due to lack of capacity. Hire too quickly, you can be forced to let employees go if you’re unable to earn enough to support their salary.  Fortunately, there a few key performance indicators that you need to hire more employees.

  1. Growth. If you’re on a trajectory to grow significantly within the next 12 months, it may be time to bring on a new associate. It is important that your firm does not wait until after you’ve reached your tipping point because then it may be too late. It can take a new associate 6 – 12 months to get up to speed and hiring right before a huge growth spurt is an ideal move. If the firm waits too long, you can risk a case or even new business or worse, due to desperation, you hire someone who clashes with your firm’s culture.
  2. Employee workload. If your associates and support staff are working long hours every week, this is most likely a sign that you need to hire more employees. As for feedback, have the team give you an idea of their hours. If the team has been consistently working overtime for over a month, consider bringing on more staff even if only part-time.more employees
  3. Client feedback. Once your associates and support staff become weighed down with too much work, customer service begins to suffer. Listen closely to client feedback. Are clients complaining about the quality of the work? What is the phone call response time, and the level of attention to cases? If the wait time is unusually long, this may be a sign that you need to bring on more help.

Before you hire new talent, make sure you fully understand what it all will entail. Understand the hidden costs, will the firm be able to afford the costs, and what position will you be filling?  Yes, you may have the work now, but is it just a seasonal thing, or is it long term?
