Law Firm Hiring: Three Hiring Mistakes Law Firms Must Avoid

Regardless of how great your law firm looks on paper, hiring the wrong people not only kills productivity, it is also a major loss in Op-Ex. Law firm hiring managers need to avoid some of the most costly hiring mistakes. Below are three mistakes to avoid:

  1. Vaguely defined responsibilities. Many law firms are so eager to hire for a position that they rush in before they’ve truly defined what they need the new person to do. This usually happens when business is up and capacity to take on new work is stretched to the max. In this case, law firm hiring managers only focus on the fact they need a new associate to take on the extra work but they don’t clearly define responsibilities and expectations. This failure can lead to a new hire fumbling around without any direction even if they are a truly talented attorney.
  2. Ignoring your gut. The interview process isn’t just about confirming what is on a resume or getting down to the facts. It is also about connecting to the potential new hire to make sure that they are a good fit for your law firm and your team. In that process, you must not be afraid to listen to your instinct.  If during the interview you feel [for whatever reason] that this particular candidate may be a problematic hire; trust your gut. If you feel that this candidate fails to listen or comes off as a “know-it-all” – a type that you know doesn’t fare well at the office; trust your gut. The same goes if you feel that despite experience in the field, they would be a great and balanced addition to the team; trust your gut.
  3. No group vetting process. If your new hire must work with others on a team, give the team a chance to vet them. Use this time as an opportunity for team members to ask relevant questions and check the chemistry. If your team feels the person is a good fit (or not) take their comments into consideration.

You have many years of experience, so you know when something does not feel right; avoid major hiring mistakes and experience more hiring success for your law firm by taking the time to do what you have to do to make a great hire, and a desperate one.
