The
hidden job market is comprised of jobs which for whatever reason are not
generally known to the public. Job seekers
who seem to find work quickly are often tapped into the hidden job market. How
can you too tap into the hidden job market? Below are a few tips:
- Develop the right
connections. Networking online and
offline is important; but just as important is knowing which connections
to make. Find and develop
relationships with individuals such as hiring managers and recruiters who
will have information about jobs which are not known to the public.
- Volunteer. Volunteering with an organization can
give you access to information about the hidden job market. For example, if you’re doing pro bono
work for a non-profit, you might be the first to learn of a new position,
even before it is sent to recruiters. This gives you invaluable leverage
over other job candidates.
- Become the person people
want to know. By developing an online and offline presence and reputation,
job seekers can become the type of person who attracts job
opportunities. Consider writing an
ongoing blog or teaching a workshop in your area of expertise to get
started building your reputation.
- Hire a recruiter. But don’t just grab any recruiter; find
a recruiter who is known for working in your area of expertise. Also, make sure the recruiter
understands your career goals and can provide you with access to the type
of job opportunities you seek.
