How Job Seekers Can Cope When The Hiring Process Becomes Stalled

by Beverly Aarons 15. November 2011 07:47

You’ve gone on two or maybe even three job interviews with a law firm and it seemed to have gone well. Unfortunately, it’s been weeks since you heard from the hiring manager or recruiter about a possible job offer, what should you do?

  1. Don’t panic and don’t make any assumptions.  The hiring process could take a considerable amount of time depending on the size of the firm and the complexity of their approval process.  Do your preliminary “thank you for interviewing” notes a week after your last interview and then follow up in two weeks time. If you were submitted through a recruiter follow-up with them about the delay.
  2. Ask the right questions. If you were submitted through a recruiter contact them and find out if they have heard anything from the employer.  If they tell you that the firm is still interested in hiring you but that there is a delay, ask the require if the delay will take weeks or months.
  3. Continue your job search. Do not stop interviewing and submitting resumes because you found the law firm of your dreams.  Until you are handed a job offer, assume that you didn’t get hired and proceed accordingly.
  4. Don’t bluff.  If you didn’t receive a job offer from another firm don’t tell the recruiter or hiring manager that you have received another offer in the hopes of speeding up the process.  Some bigger law firms may just call your bluff and suggest that you take the other offer.  Instead, tell the recruiter or hiring manager that you are interested in the position; but that you are still interviewing with other firms.
