When most people talk about career changers, they
mostly mention going from one particular industry to another; but what if you
want to transition from job seeker to recruiter? Below are a few tips:
- Understand
that this is a real game changer.
Transitioning from a job seeker to a recruiter requires a different
mindset and outlook. You will need
to begin thinking like a business owner and seeing the world through the
eyes of not only the employee but the employer.
- Learn
to sell. Recruiting is a business,
and that’s true in both independent recruiting and in-house
positions. The recruiter is
required to sell themselves to both the client and the job seeker and then
they have to turn around and sell the job candidate to the employer. At every turn there is the job of sales.
- Master
time management. While most
attorneys understand the importance of an hour (or a minute), working as a
recruiter, especially independently, requires that you focus the majority
of your efforts on those things that generate revenue.
- Become
an entrepreneur. If you’re choosing
to transition into an independent recruiter, you will need to consider all
aspects of your business, sales, marketing, branding, finances etc. Read
all you can about starting a business and try to find a mentor.
- Become
a psychologist. Not only must an
attorney turned recruiter have the skills to convince and persuade, they
must also understand what motivates people. This ability to play armchair
psychologist will help the new recruiter when interacting with both
clients and job candidates.
