While
there have been some indications that the economy is trying to improve,
unemployment is still above 9 percent and many job seekers are facing job
searches which can last a year or more. So how does a job seeker survive and
succeed in a long job search? Let’s take a look at five strategies:
- Sustainable
and persistent efforts are more effective than short bursts. Job seekers should make sure they have a
daily job search schedule so that they can sustain their search for a
longer amount of time. Keep track
of what you’ve accomplished and make a weekly list of things to do for
your job search.
- Make
sure you take a break. A long job search can be draining and if
a job seeker fails to take proper breaks they could burn out. Make sure
you take a day or two off every week so you can recharge your batteries.
- Don’t
depend on only one search method.
A long job search will require you to vary your methods and cover a lot of
ground. Be sure to include both online and offline job search strategies
as well as networking.
- Make
sure you put enough effort into researching the companies for which you’re
applying. Failing
to do your homework before sending off a resume can end up wasting
valuable job search effort. Remember, by researching companies before you
apply, you increase your chances of getting called for an interview.
- Don’t
focus on the bad news about the economy. While it’s easy to get bummed out about high
unemployment and a saturated job market, take control of your mood by
focusing on the fact that you will eventually find work if you implement
an effective strategy.
