Many
attorneys searching for work have extended their efforts nationally and in some
cases internationally. But what are some of the factors job seekers need to
consider before they decide to pick up and move to another city or country for
a job opportunity? Let’s take a look at a few questions every job seeker should
ask themselves before they move:
- Do you really want to take this job and remain
there in the long-term? We know
that things change; but before you move, ask yourself if this is a real
career move or are you simply desperate for a job. If you’re simply taking a survival job,
it may not be worth moving to another state.
- Are there other job opportunities in the state
you’re considering? The worst case
scenario is that you could move for a job and then within a few months
you’re back on the job market because the job didn’t work out. Are you
moving to a city where there are plenty of job opportunities?
- Do you have friends and family in the city
you’re considering? While we like to believe in the image of the rugged
individual, moving to a city where you have no family ties or friends can
be psychologically difficult. If you don’t have any contacts in the city
you’re considering, make sure you have a plan to make new friends before
you move.
- Do you have real estate which you need to sell
before moving? If so, make sure
that you give yourself enough time to sell the house and that you have a
contingency plan for if it does not sell. Can you rent it out at a price
which will cover your mortgage?
