If
you’re searching for a job, then you’re probably using social networking sites
such as Leopard Pride to help you create an online presence and connect with
potential employers and recruiters. But for many job seekers, creating a social
networking profile specifically designed to attract employers can be a
challenge. What should you include? What should you definitely leave out? Below are a few do’s and don’ts of creating
your job search social networking profiles:
- Treat your job search social networking profile
like an electronic resume. In simple terms, keep it professional. Don’t try to be too personal or too
cute, leave that to your personal Facebook account. Leave out pictures and
references to your pets, kids, spouse and the vacation you recently took.
- Include a photo or avatar which represents you
in a professional manner. Don’t include photos of you drinking, in a
swimming suit or in other casual situations on your job search social
networking profile. If you’re going to use a photo, use a simple business
style head shot.
- When choosing a username/nickname for your job
search social networking profile, at least include your real first
name. You might even want to
include the initial of your last name if you don’t feel comfortable using
your full name.
- Completely file out your profile’s summary.
Your profile will be the first thing that recruiters and employers see
when they’re searching for candidates. Make sure to include on your
profile a brief synopsis of your experience and education using the right
keywords so that you can be easily found.
- If you’re making comments on a social network
such as Leopard Pride, make sure those comments are professional and try
to avoid text speak such as “lol” or “omg” because while this is
acceptable on a personal social network, it may give employers a bad
impression.
