Interviews
aren’t just about the employer making decisions about the job candidate; it is
also an opportunity for the job candidate to make some of their own assessments
about the employer. The key question every job seeker should ask of themselves
during the interview is, “Do I really want to work here?” Below are a few signs that the employer may
not be quite right for you:
- Rude and inconsiderate
behavior on the part of the interviewer and/or their staff. Did the
interviewer show up late? It’s not
such a bad sign if the interviewer was five or even ten minutes late; but
if they showed up any later than that and/or failed to apologize for their
tardiness, it’s probably just a preview of things to come if you take the
job.
- Your interview feels like a
monologue, or worse, it feels like an interrogation with you doing all of
the talking and the interviewer simply questioning you. Interviews of course will include
questions; but they should also operate more like a discussion. The interviewer should question your job
skills and experience; but also share with your the company’s needs,
culture and what they offer their employees in terms of career
satisfaction.
- The interviewer complains to
you that they have been unable to keep anyone since their loyal employee
took stress leave two years ago or any other variation of “we just haven’t
found anyone for this position since our A+ employee left.” If an interviewer admits that they are
unable to keep anyone in the position for long, it might be a sign that
there is a flaw with the company not the former employees.
