Job Seeker Tips: How To Prove You Deserve The Salary You Want

by Beverly Aarons 10. May 2011 09:02

Every job seeker wants to negotiate the best compensation package before they take the job offer. But how exactly can a job seeker prove that they are worth the salary they’re requesting?  Let’s take alook at a few tips:

  1. The first thing the job seeker needs to do is a get a grip on the realities of the marketplace. Don’t guess or engage in wishful thinking.  Take the time to examine the going salary for what you offer. How much are people making who are doing what you’re doing? How similar is your experience and value to the high-earners?  Use the information you find about the going compensation rate as a gauge for what you can reasonably earn.
  2. Carefully document your accomplishments. And when we say accomplishments what we mean is -- how exactly did you bring value to former employers?  If you can put these accomplishments in dollar figures the more likely you can use them to increase the compensation package the employer is willing to settle on.
  3. Now most job seekers stop at the point where they document their accomplishments and value brought to former employers. But the high-earners also show the employer the potential value they can bring to the company considering them for employment. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a direct pitch, it can be indirect. For example, if the employer is trying to branch out into immigration law and you have connections which could increase their business in that area of expertise, it’s important to emphasize that fact.
