Three Reasons You Shouldn’t Settle For Less In Your Job Search

by Beverly Aarons 2. May 2011 09:01

The jobmarket is still tough and many attorneys are tempted to accept jobs which our significantly below their skill level and experience.  But does settling for less really benefit the job seeker? Absolutely not, below are three reasons why you should never settle for less in your job search:

  1. If you take a job which is significantly beneath your skill level you will eventually grow bored as the work becomes routine and mundane. Even if you are able to stick in there for a few months or even a few years you will eventually want to find a job more suited to your level of expertise.
  2. Finding a job on your level will be more difficult after you’ve taken a “lesser” position. This is especially the case for new law school graduates who have accepted non-attorney jobs in law firms and then want to later move up to an attorney position. These law school graduates often find they need to switch firms if they want to get an attorney job.
  3. If you take a job which is significantly below your skill level, eventually you may grow to resent the employer because you feel undervalued or even exploited. Oftentimes attorneys who take lower level positions find that the employer wants them to do higher level work for which they are not being paid. This situation can cause conflict and resentment.
