While fewer
employers are using the traditional reference check for potential candidates,
the “reference” is still an important aspect of any job candidate’s repertoire
of job seeking tools. Below are a
few tips on how job candidates can best prepare their references for the
employer call after they interview:
1.
Make
sure that your references are “warm.”
Most reference checking takes place after the employer decides that they
are ready to make you an offer. At
some point before they make their offer, when you’re sure you are being
seriously considered for the position, you should contact those who have already agreed to be a
reference and give them a heads up.
2.
Discuss
with your reference what aspects of your skills and work experience you would
like them to share with the employer.
While you want your references to speak consistently about your quality
as an employee, you also want them to discuss different aspects of your
qualities.
3.
Double
check your reference’s contact information to make sure nothing has
changed. Also, find out what their
preferred method of contact is and communicate that preference to the employer.
4.
Let
your references know when they can expect a call or email from the
employer. And if you can, let them
know with whom they will be speaking.
5.
Ask
your references to call or email you after they have been contacted by the
employer. Once the employer has contacted the reference and especially after
you have been hired, thank your reference for their assistance.
