Legal Job Seeker Tips: Five Handshake Styles You Should Avoid?

by Beverly Aarons 3. March 2011 10:07
The handshake is an important part of our daily rituals.  But for job seekers, the handshake is one of the first non-verbal communications they will have with an employer, colleague or contact. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, our handshake is just not right. And while a job seeker doesn’t need to be perfect in their handshake, there are some handshakes they should absolutely avoid:
  1. Job seekers should avoid a handshake that is so tight that it “crushes” the hand of the other person.  A handshake should be strong enough to clasp the other person’s hand without hurting them.
  2. Job seekers should avoid handshakes that are wimpy and of significantly less strength than the other party.  This type of handshake is also called a “dead fish” handshake because the person is barely grasping the other party’s hand at all.
  3. Handshakes which grab hold of the other person’s fingers should be avoided by job seekers. When shaking someone’s hand, make sure that you clasp their palm, not their fingers.
  4. Job seekers should avoid giving “cold and clammy” or “sweaty” handshakes.  Make sure your hands are dry and warm when shaking another person’s hand. If you’ve been handling food or drink, try to keep your right hand clean, dry and available for a handshake. That takes us to our next point.
  5. Never shake hands with your left hand. If you are at a networking event, hold your drink in your left hand, so that your right hand is available to great another person.
