Networking Tips They Don’t (But Should) Teach In College

by Beverly Aarons 11. January 2011 09:32
Not to “beat a dead horse” because it has been said time and time again, networking is important. Not just important, but critical to growing your business if you’re a recruiter or finding a job if you’re a job seeker.  But there are some networking “tips” that aren’t often being taught or talked about that everyone should consider.

1.     You are always networking.  For the shy amongst us, that sounds like a nightmare; but it’s true.  In the age of YouTube and smart phones, any public interaction (or altercation) can be instantly recorded and uploaded to the internet and become viral within hours.  That means that when you are out and about in the public realm, you need to put on your best face.  Avoid behavior and speech that could be used against you. A word to the wise – watch your manners in public and use your “inside voice” you never know who will be watching.

2.     In the same vein as above, guard your online profiles, blogs and websites.  Remember, the internet is a public place, so uploading videos or photos of yourself in compromising or embarrassing situations isn’t wise if you’re trying to network with your best face – and who amongst us isn’t?

3.     When attending networking events don’t underestimate the value of connecting to other job seekers. Many job seekers can offer valuable information and even job leads.  Since everyone isn’t looking for the same job, a fellow job seeker might connect you to a job lead that isn’t a good match for them; but could fit you just fine.
