Sourcing for the
best candidates requires a multi-prong approach that includes many old school
tactics as well as new school tactics such as using social media and online job
boards. But for recruiters who are
looking for passive candidates for their job orders, they must also use cold
calling. Cold calling can be a bit
scary for even the most experienced recruiter; but below are a few tips that
can help you improve your cold calling technique:
1.
Don’t
forget to use online tools such as social networking sites as the starting
point of your search for job candidates.
A well placed email or post to someone’s online account can make a cold
call a lot warmer and give you a “reason” for calling.
2.
Remember
that the cold call is not about making the “sale” so to speak. It’s not realistic to think that you
will sell the candidate on a job right on the first call. Instead, the cold call is designed so
that you can have the opportunity to set up a “meeting” which need not be in
person, to actually sell them on the job opportunity.
3.
Do a
little research on the candidate you want to cold call before you make your
approach. Just like connecting with them online first can make your cold call a
little warmer, letting them know that you have a little knowledge about them
could help warm up your prospect.
For example, you might want to congratulate them on a recent
accomplishment or mention that for which you’re recruiting hires many lawyers
from their alma mater.
