As baby boomers
retire, a new generation of workers are entering the legal field. Generation Y or what is commonly known
as the Millennial generation are generally considered hardworking, enthusiastic
individuals who aren’t willing to take just any job. Below are a few things every legal recruiter should know
about the Generation Y job candidate:
1.
Generation
Y job candidates are looking for a job that has meaning. In several surveys conducted, Generation
Y job seekers expressed a desire to find a job where they could perform work
that made a difference in their community and the world.
2.
Generation
Y job candidates are looking for work/life balance. There are very few job candidates in this generation willing
to sacrifice their personal lives for their sake of their jobs, nor are they
slackers. But what most job
candidates in this generation desire is the ability to work hard at something
meaningful and the ability to have a real life. This means that jobs offering generous vacation and
flex-time may win out over jobs that offer lots of money but little time for a
personal life.
3.
Generation
Y job candidates grew up being a part of teams. One of the most common complaints heard from this generation
of job candidates is the lack of team structure on jobs. Workplace environments
that emphasis a common goal and purpose may find more success in attracting
Generation Y job candidates.
