Once you have determined that your personality traits, qualities and skills are appropriate for the new practice area you need to find open doors to entry into your desired practice area. The first place you should look is at opportunities in your current firm. If you're considered a dependable and professional attorney then partners and senior attorneys may be more than willing to let you switch practice areas even if it's on a trail basis initially. If you are applying for job opportunities at a different law firm, then you need to highlight the skills and experience in your resume that will be most useful to the new practice area. You might even consider attending a seminar or class to familiarize yourself with the new practice area and to demonstrate to any potential employer that you are committed to mastering the new practice area. Most importantly make sure that you are networking with those who can help you make the transition to a new practice area and remind your recruiter of your objective as you continue your job search.
